The Heimann Barbár (“barbarian”) is a rich, complex, full-bodied red that puts a spin on the classic warm bikavér wines of the Szekszárd region. The name reflects on Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Allegro Barbaro, a composition that is strong and powerful, yet still elegant and easy to enjoy. That description fits this wine just as accurately – rich, complex yet very drinkable.
The wine is an eclectic blend of grapes: cabernet franc and merlot are blended with the little-known grape tannat and local kékfrankos. The Heimann family brought tannat from South-West France to Szekszárd believing that its robust, rich character can enhance the traditional Szekszárd style, and they have been proven right with this wine. Together with kékfrankos, the traditional grape variety of the area, this wine reflects on the classic Szekszárdi bikavér (“Bull’s blood of Szekszárd) style with a fresh twist. The result is a vibrant, juicy red that still isn’t overpowering, and has just the right balance of strength and finesse. The 2018 vintage is smooth and refined, with a medium body and an elegant style. An innovative top-class wine.
