#1: Volcanic White Wines of Tokaj & Somló
- 6 May 2022, 7pm @ James Tagesbar (Hobrechtstraße 66, 12047 Berlin), approx. 2,5 hours

Tokaj is perhaps Hungary’s most famous wine region, home to unique local grapes such as Furmint and Hárslevelű, complex volcanic soils, and a special microclimate that produces some of the best late harvest wines in the world. Somló, on the other hand, is one of Hungary’s smallest wine regions and still somewhat of a local secret, even though its wines often match the quality of their Tokaji counterparts.
We’ve written about Tokaj and Somló previously in detail.
All these hard-to-pronounce grape varieties, tiny vineyards and complex regions might sound scary at first, but we’ll cut through the complexity, dive into the regions’ wines and taste what makes them special! See you there!
#2: Classic Red Wines of Eger and Szekszárd
- 20 May 2022, 7pm @ James Tagesbar (Hobrechtstraße 66, 12047 Berlin), approx. 2,5 hours
- €35 per person, including at least 6 wines and an assortment of delicious bites & snacks prepared by James Tagesbar
Eger and Szekszárd are two of Hungary’s top red wine growing regions. Both are famous for growing lots of local grapes such as Kékfrankos and Kadarka, and both have a traditional local blend known as Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood”). On the other hand, Eger is in the colder, windier northeast of the country while Szekszárd is in the warm south, and the soils are quite different too, so while the two regions have lots in common, they produce wines of contrasting styles.
We’ve written about both Bull’s Blood and Kékfrankos in detail recently.

Natural wines are the craze among the cool kids nowadays. Wines made with no additives, minimal human involvement, as close to nature as it gets. Fans love the fascinating funky flavors these wines have and their down-to-earth ethos, while detractors smirk at the ‘weirdness’ of these wines. One thing is for sure: natural wines bring a new and exciting twist to the wine world, and they are definitely here to stay.
In Hungary, there are both winemakers who have been making wines slowly and naturally for decades, with minimal intervention and lots of care, and there are also plenty of new, experimental wineries who make natural wines as well. We’ve written about the scene before in detail here.
Come and browse through Hungary’s exciting natural wine scene with us, taste the best and most exciting wines and learn all about the latest styles that winemakers are experimenting with! See you there!
